PD Dr. med. Jorn Fierstra, PhD

Group leader

Since 2018, Dr. Jorn Fierstra, MD PhD is a cerebrovascular neurosurgeon at the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Zurich. His PhD related research projects at the University of Toronto (2008-2012) were centered around the development and clinical translation of the BOLD-CVR technique, which he introduced at the Clinical Neuroscience Center, thereby founding the ASTRAN lab in 2013. Since its erection, Dr Fierstra has been the senior group leader and has received competitive third party funding on institutional and national level. Research findings originating from the ASTRAN lab have also been awarded multiple prestigious awards. The team currently has two postdocs and two PhD students.

Vittorio Stumpo

PhD candidate

Dr. Stumpo obtained his medical degree at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and Fondazione Policlinico Gemelli in Rome in October 2019 under the supervision of Prof. Roberto Pallini and Prof. Alessandro Olivi. During medical school he spent dedicated time in research at The Brain Cancer Biology and Therapy Laboratory at Johns Hopkins Department of Neurosurgery, at the Harvey Cushing Neuro-Oncology Laboratories at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School and at the Laboratory for Centrosome and Cytoskeleton Biology at Heinrich-Heine Universität in Dusseldorf. He joined the ASTRAN Lab at the Department of Neurosurgery of University Hospital Zurich in February 2021 where he is currently pursuing a PhD investigating novel hemodynamic imaging markers for enhanced glioblastoma characterization.

Jacopo Bellomo

PhD candidate

Dr. Bellomo obtained his medical degree at the University of Zurich and the University Hospital Zurich in October 2021. For his master thesis he worked under the supervision of Prof. Luca Regli and PD Dr. med. Giuseppe Esposito. He joined the ASTRAN Lab at the Department of Neurosurgery of University Hospital Zurich in April 2021 where he is currently pursuing a PhD investigating advanced neuroimaging in the clinical assessment of patient with large-vessel occlusion acute ischemic stroke.
